Motorcycle Trip, September 2005

I left on Sunday, 9/11, to meet my brother Lindsay for a week-long bike trip. This was the second anniversary of our Mom's funeral, and the Wednesday of our trip marked 26 weeks since Carol had died...a full half year. It was a grand week to be away, and not alone!

My dear friends Lorne and Judy MacLeod, who live on Lake Norman, north of Charlotte, NC, took me on a very beautiful ride on Monday, 9/12, through some amazing mountain passages. Within minutes of each other, the three of us, and Lin, who had ridden down from Indiana, PA, met up in Fancy Gap, VA at the cabin that we'd rented for the night. We rode to dinner together to Mt. Airy, NC that night, and enjoyed the town, and seeing the home that Andy Griffith lived in for over 30 years. After a good sleep, the four of us rode to Mabry Mill, had a great breakfast, and the MacLeods left for their ride of the day, and Lin and I headed south on the Blue Ridge Parkway. The photos will show some of the amazing sights that we saw along our path through the Parkway, the Great Smoky Mountain National Park, into Pigeon Forge, TN, down to Fontana Dam, TN and the ride of "The Tail of the Dragon", which we survived - 318 turns in 11 miles, many of them dramatic switchbacks.

For the bikers among us, my bike is a Harley-Davidson Ultra Classic, named by my friend Susie Clement as "Black Fire". Lin rides a Kawasaki Vulcan 1600 Classic, which I've named (among other things) "Rice Burner"! I have given my big brother the name of "The Gypsy King", and when you see his Vulcan loaded with bags, you'll know why!
